Accidents and injuries can happen at anytime, anywhere, for any number of reasons, making our First Aid course essential for any professional working with horses.
Following a BHS Two-Day Initial First Aid Course, you can keep your training up-to-date with our handy BHS One-Day Refresher First Aid Course.
You will:
- Gain a basic overview of first aid procedures
- Learn how to administer first aid
- Learn what to do if you are first on the scene of an accident
- Learn essential help to provide until a professional arrives
First Aid (England, Wales and Scotland):
There are plenty of course dates available, please ensure you complete a refresher course within 30 days from your previous certificate expiry. Failure to do so will to do so will mean you must complete the Initial First Aid course.

BHS Two-Day Initial First Aid Course
- For anyone with no first aid training, or whose qualification has lapsed
- On completion, you will receive an e-certificate of achievement, valid for two years.
BHS One-Day Refresher First Aid Course
- For anyone who has previously been awarded the BHS Two-Day Initial First Aid Course certificate to update your skills and knowledge
- For anyone who has previously been awarded the HSE First Aid at Work certificate
- If your first aid has already lapsed, you can book onto this course within 30 days from your previous certificate expiry date.
Other First Aid Courses Accepted by the BHS
- HSE First Aid at Work certificates can be accepted (Three- or four-day courses only).
- Ofqual Accredited Level 3 certificate (Three day courses only).
- First Aid Response Exam run under the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC)
First Aid Training Course Dates
To book the BHS One-Day Refresher First Aid Course, please provide evidence of previous attendance at a first aid at work or BHS first aid course. If this qualification has lapsed, you will be asked to attend our two-day BHS First Aid Initial Course.

If you live in the Republic of Ireland you should do the First Aid Responder Course (FAR). This is the equivalent to the First Aid at Work Course in the UK. This course is accepted by the British Horse Society.
This course replaces the old occupational first aid and is three days in duration. You receive a nationally recognised certificate issued by the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council which is valid for two years

*BHS Accredited Professional Coaches are required to keep their first aid qualification up-to-date. This course does not count towards CPD for Accredited Coaches.
Entry Requirements
Minimum age of 16 years old. Attendees between the ages of 14 and 15 must be accompanied by a paying adult.
When booking the BHS One-Day Refresher First Aid Course, we ask that you provide evidence of previous attendance at a first aid at work or BHS first aid course. If this qualification has lapsed, you will be asked to attend our two-day BHS First Aid Initial Course.
